Support System for Blind People in the Workplace
The objective of this Chair established in partnership with the University of Castile-La Mancha is to develop a mobile hardware/software solution that provides blind users with audio information feeds on non-verbal communication to support social interaction in the workplace.
The proposed solution is a portable, non-invasive system that will provide blind users with audio information on the number of people around them and their position (angle and estimated distance).
The proposed solution will use the following hardware components:
- Mobile terminal (smartphone) attached to the blind user's body with a front-facing camera on the back. This will capture images in front of the user, which will then be processed to extract useful information.
- Lens to augment the camera's field of view. This will be fixed to the outside of the camera and will augment the field of view.
- Bluetooth headphone connected to the mobile terminal for audio feeds.
The software solution will comprise the following modules:
- User interface designed in accordance with the accessibility recommendations for mobile terminals.
- Image processing using algorithms to correct the distortion caused by the lens, detect faces and identify their spatial location (angle and distance).
- Audio feeds of the information obtained from the image processing module.
